2010 Registry Award Winners
It is with great pleasure that we announce the winners of the 2010 SGC Registry Awards. Developed earlier this year, the Registry Awards program was designed to recognize outstanding achievements by collectors on the SGC Registry within a number of categories. It is our hope that the SGC Registry continues to grow and that collectors continue to enjoy sharing in each others passions and accomplishments through this venue. Congratulations to all SGC Registry participants who work towards their collecting goals!
Best of the Registry:
Ron Goldberg 1952 Redman Tobacco Baseball
An extremely attractive and condition sensitive set, this 1952 Redman Tobacco set is 100% complete with a GPA of 88.27 and is highlighted by the very tough Ted Williams card in 88, Willie Mays in 88, and capped off by a Stan Musial in 96. All cards are scanned and make browsing this set a treat.
Michael Bow 1959 Topps Baseball
One of Topps' most popular efforts, this 1959 Topps baseball set is nearly complete with 578/579 cards and comes in at a GPA of 88.01. This set demonstrates a commitment to quality and eye appeal which is apparent from the scans available for viewing.
Best Sets - Baseball:
Al Jurgela 1923-24 Tomas Gutierrez
This collector has put together the finest known set of these cards, acquiring 73 of 85 subjects including five of the six rare Negro League Hall of Famers featured in this set. Each card has a confirmed population of between 4 and 7 examples which makes attempting this set a daunting task and reaching the high level of completion featured on the SGC Registry a phenomenal achievement.
James Fiore 1971 Topps Baseball
A monster set at 752 cards, this set is complete with a GPA of 89.87. The black borders make this set highly condition sensitive and a set of this rating that much more impressive.
Best Sets - Football:
Carl Lamendola 1894 N302 Mayo Cut Plug
The 1894 Mayo set is the oldest sets available to football collectors and hailed as a difficult set to complete due to the scarce "Anonymous" card featuring John Dunlop. This set is complete with a Dunlop SGC 40 and presents scans of all the cards for collectors to enjoy.
Kirk Robinson 1968 Topps Football
Sporting a 92.75 GPA and 96% completion, this set towers above the nearest challenger. The popular set features many Hall of Famers and is anchored by a Joe Namath and Bob Griese rookie in 96. Striving for quality examples of each card, this set is poised to creep closer to the elusive GPA of 96.00.
Best Sets - Hockey:
Michael Buchala 1954-55 Topps
This set was Topps' first foray into the hockey market and thus developed a strong following with collectors drawn to its vibrant colors and larger format than the contemporary Parkhurst issues. This registered set is 100% complete with a GPA of 85.54.
Ron Goldberg 1970-71 Dad's Cookies
A popular set for its simple design and extensive player selection, this registered set boats 137 of 144 cards graded 98 or higher including a half dozen SGC 100s on 40 year old cards. A testament to patience and quality, all cards are scanned for users to enjoy.
Best Sets - Basketball:
Arthur Sainsbury 1986-87 Fleer
Perhaps one of the most famous basketball sets ever produced due to its inclusion of Michael Jordan's rookie card, the 1986-87 Fleer set draws in many collectors due to its vibrant design and excellent player selection. The 86-87 Fleer set is the most popular basketball set on the SGC Registry, and this set is 100% complete with a GPA of 93.33 atop the rankings.
John Diaz 1993-94 Finest
The Topps Finest cards are some of the most condition sensitive cards produced over the last two decades due to their delicate nature and tendency to scratch. Building this set in high grade is an undertaking and this set is nearly complete at 214 of 220 cards with a GPA of 96.93.
Best Sets - Boxing:
James Heffron 1910 American Caramel E77
A very difficult caramel set, the E77 is one of several E series sets popular among boxing collectors. Although small in size at just 25 cards, this registered set is complete with a GPA of 56.25 which puts it firmly ahead of others listed on the SGC Registry.
Brent Butcher 1910 E78
A rare set of prize fighters, the E78 set is another one of the E sets popular with collectors. The cards are not as readily available as others and rarely appear in high grade. This registered set is complete at 25 cards and boasts an astounding GPA of 67.12 for the issue.
Best Sets - Non-Sport:
Pete D'Luhosch 1953 Topps Wings
The detailed designs and informative writeups of the featured planes make this set as educational as it is collectible. This registered set is complete at 200 cards with a GPA of 88.58. This set is built from the best of many cards as the collector continues to upgrade and register multiple sets towards the goal of a complete, high grade number one set. All cards are scanned.
Michael Pratt 1888 Allen & Ginter N2 American Indians
A complete master set of this colorful and collectible 19th century issue, this registered set is 100% complete with a GPA of 78.61. All 54 cards are scanned for viewing and the set features an astounding 80% in NM or better.
